Tag campaign links

When you share a link, vidstats can see the referring site but not which of your posts, emails, or buttons it was. Add UTM tags to the URL and it can.

Tagged traffic appears in the Campaigns table on Audience.

Take your URL, add a ?, then the tags separated by &:

https://yoursite.com/watch/shawshank?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=july-recap

That is a normal link. Paste it anywhere you would paste the plain one.

TagAnswersExample
utm_sourceWhere is the link?newsletter, twitter, reddit
utm_mediumWhat kind of channel?email, social, paid
utm_campaignWhich push?july-recap, black-friday
utm_contentWhich link in it?hero-button, footer-link
utm_termWhich keyword? (paid search)streaming+analytics

utm_source and utm_medium are enough for most people. Add the others when you need to tell two links in the same campaign apart.

Newsletter ?utm_source=newsletter&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=CAMPAIGN
X / Twitter ?utm_source=twitter&utm_medium=social
Reddit ?utm_source=reddit&utm_medium=social&utm_campaign=SUBREDDIT
Paid search ?utm_source=google&utm_medium=paid&utm_campaign=CAMPAIGN&utm_term=KEYWORD
  • Lowercase, with hyphens. july-recap and July Recap are counted as two campaigns.
  • Never tag your own internal links. A UTM tag on a link between two of your own pages starts a new attribution mid-visit and splits one session in two.
  • Tag every link in a campaign, or none. Untagged traffic from the same source lands under Direct or Referral instead, which makes the campaign look smaller than it was.

Open one of your tagged links yourself, then open Audience. Your visit appears in the Campaigns table, and under Paid or Email in Channels depending on the utm_medium you used.
